The drug is usually taken to help cure, mitigate or prevent disease. But experts warn that consumed too much of the drug can actually pose a risk.
Eating a lot of medication every day can create its own medical risks for the person than the cure. For that you should consider which drugs are the priority to be consumed each day.
“The more drugs dikonsusmi then increase the chance of drug interaction or major side effects and the possibility of something bad happening,” said Sophia De Monte, spokesman of the American Pharmacists Association.
This condition is called polypharmacy which excessive drug use to someone who really needs. This does not only happen on prescription drugs but also can occur from counter medicines and supplements.
De Monte and Norman P Tomaka said that many possible drug consumption could have problems in three main areas, namely:
1. Interaction of drugs, one drug could work against other drugs in a strange way, so the greater the risk of interaction that could affect the health of the person.
2. Affect medication adherence, more and more drugs taken it will cause much burden on that person thereby increasing the risk of decreased compliance in taking medication. Lack of compliance will lead to other conditions, such as poor adherence of antibiotics can make the bacteria become more resistant bacteria.
3. Side effects, each drug consumed has its own risk of side effects, and sometimes drugs can mask the symptoms of the side effects of other drugs. So if there is an adverse reaction, one becomes difficult to guess which drug triggers these side effects.
“Doctors and pharmacists should cooperate in reviewing prescription for Pasian in minimizing drug needs to be taken, so that it can obtain the best treatment with minimal side effects,” said De Monte.
Meanwhile De Monte and Tomaka suggest some steps one can do to make sure the drug is consumed not pose Environment for greater than its benefits in treating the disease, namely:
1.Eating each drug separately with water
2.Read all information provided from any drugs taken either prescription drugs or medications that are sold freely, 3.so they can know is there any potential problems that may arise
4.Examine and inquire benefits, side effects and contraindications of each drug given to doctors and pharmacists
5.Reported symptoms after starting taking a new medication.
