Osteoporosis, a disease mainly women (but also affects men ), is a decrease in bone mass and mechanical strength that causes increased susceptibility to fractures. It is a silent disease that according to the World Health Organization (WHO ) suffer between 30% and 40% of women over 50 years and is usually detected with the first bone fracture that can be triggered by a simple blow.

Human bones reach their maximum level of calcification between 20 and 30 years. From that moment, begins the process of decalcification that after menopause in women and shoots around 60 years for men. Hence it has to act preventively. Dr. Paul Lucas, a specialist in Traumatology and Orthopedics, warning of the need to take some preventive measures to strengthen us and make us stronger and more resistant to disease :

• Walking half an hour. Physical exercise is important actively to achieve maximum bone density and, thus, protect bones. Walking half an hour a day maintenance gymnastics or swimming are some of the exercises suitable for all ages and very effective to strengthen.

• Avoid alcohol and snuff. Its consumption is toxic to the bone.

• Consuming milk or other dairy products. It is essential to follow a healthy diet and eat four to five servings of dairy a day, such as milk, yogurt, cheese, etc products. Dairy products fortified with calcium or drug treatment can be a good option when it comes to not eat the recommended daily amount of calcium.

• Take vitamin D. We must control their production and take vitamin D supplements, if necessary and advised by the specialist.

“It is estimated that in Spain there are over two million postmenopausal women affected by osteoporosis and, therefore, with a significant risk of hip fracture or elsewhere in the body,” says Dr. Paul Lucas. Hence, the International Association of Osteoporosis encourage us to become ” Women of Steel ” immune to osteoporosis.
