Ovarian Cysts
What is a cyst ovarian ?
An ovarian cyst is a sac filled with liquid or semi-solid material that forms on or within an ovary , small organs in the pelvis that make female hormones and contain eggs .
There are different types of cysts, many of which are normal or harmless (benign). Functional cysts , which are not related to any disease , occurring as a result of ovulation ( when the ovary releases an egg ) . Functional cysts usually shrink over time, usually in 60 days without any specific treatment.
Functional cyst ovarian , which are relatively common , should not be confused with other types of cysts that are related to diseases. In diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome or ovarian cancer as there are growths or bumps that grow on the ovaries. Tell your doctor if you have any symptoms of which are described below. He or she can determine what type of cyst you have .
What are the symptoms of an ovarian cyst ?
Some small cysts cause no symptoms , you may not even know you have a cyst. Larger cysts can cause any of the following symptoms :
A change in the bleeding of your normal menstrual period ( abnormal bleeding )
Pelvic pain or a dull ache in your back
A feeling of fullness (swollen ) in the lower part of your body
Pain during sex
Painful Menstrual Periods
Some symptoms if they hold may be associated with a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome , a hormonal imbalance that causes irregular periods and other hormone related problems , including obesity and infertility. Other symptoms of PCOS include hirsutism (increased hair growth on the body) and obesity.
What can cause an ovarian cyst ?
No exact cause of cyst ovarian , but tend to form when the ovary produces too much hormone estrogen.
How is it diagnosed ovarian cyst ?
Functional ovarian cysts usually disappear without any treatment. Your doctor can give you medicines that contain hormones ( like birth control pills ) to stop ovulation. If you do not ovulate , you will not develop functional cysts. In some cases , you may need surgery to remove the cyst.
Types of surgeries
The type of surgery used depends on the size of the cyst and the look you have on ultrasound. The different procedures used include:
Laparoscopy - This is a procedure in which the doctor puts a small device through an incision in the abdomen. He or she looks at the reproductive organs and the pelvic cavity using this appliance. If the cyst is small , your doctor may remove through the small incision made in the area of the pubic hairline .
Laparotomy - This procedure uses a larger incision to remove the cyst . The cyst will be tested to see if it is cancerous . If it is cancer , the doctor may have to remove one or both ovaries , uterus, a fold of fatty tissue called the omentum and some lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small bean-shaped structures that are found throughout the body that produce and store cells that fight infection , but can also contain cancer cells.
What are the complications of an ovarian cyst ?
If the cyst ruptures , it can cause severe pain and swelling of the abdomen.
Can prevent cyst ovarian ?
Taking medicines that contain hormones ( like birth control pills ) cause ovulation to stop. However, many women taking low dose oral contraceptives may still ovulate . Although there has been no study showing that oral contraceptive pills reduce the formation of cyst ovarian , many doctors continue to prescribe this regimen.
