MIDDLETOWN – The city welcomed the much-anticipated Chipotle Mexican Grill this week with an eager public who queued up in lines at both entrances in the new plaza at 808 Washington St./Route 66.
General Manager Stirling Waldron said she is thrilled to have an opportunity to serve the community. The company insists on fresh food made to order and fast service.
Diners may be surprised to discover Miss Teen United States, Connecticut, Alexis Volpe of Middletown, working the front end, serving guests.
The menu is keto, paleo and Whole30 friendly, and includes burritos, quesadillas, bowls, tacos, salads and children’s options.
Chipotle diners can choose white or brown rice, meat, which include chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas and sofritas. There are also vegan and vegetarian options, including tofu, and toppings: queso, guacamole, a number of freshly made salsas – chile-corn, tomatillo, green chili and tomatillo-red chili – sour cream, pinto and black beans, various cheeses and more.
Thirst quenchers include beer and margaritas.
The assembly line is akin to Subway’s, with all the fresh ingredients laid out in a line station, so each customer can pick and choose their selections, said employee Mallory Broe. “You’ll never find a freezer here.”
The kitchen is wide open so customers can watch the preparation process. And cleanliness is key.
“We take hygiene very seriously. At the top of the hour, no matter what you’re doing, we stop, wash and sanitize our hands, then put on gloves,” Broe said.
