run-run-runCardiovascular endurance Falls in children and youth. Young people do not run as fast as their parents did at the same age, doctors say in a meeting of the American Heart Association, held in Dallas. This is a worrying statistic that reveals the consequences of obesity and an increasingly sedentary life.

The resistance decreased by 15 % compared to 1975
The decline is observed in all countries
The trend is worrying for their impact on health

Children and young people today have a 15% lower cardiovascular endurance in 1975, is because they exercise less and the spread of obesity.

Although the data are anecdotal, are worrisome for researchers if measured in terms of health. To run one mile ( 1.6 kilometers ) children and young people now need 90 seconds longer than those of the same age 30 years ago, a sign that physical conditions may be less healthy than previous generations, as adults.

Lead researcher Dr Grant Tomkinson and a group of scientists from the South Australia School of Health Sciences in Australia, analyzed data spanning 46 years and including more than 25 million children in 28 countries.

Less exercise and obesity

In general, in all nations, cardiovascular endurance, as measured by the distance that can be traveled in a given time - steadily declined 5% in each decade, according to the study.

This decrease is observed both in children and in segment girls 9-17 years. It happens more often in Western countries, but some parts of Asia such as South Korea, mainland China and Hong Kong are also experienced this sad phenomenon.

Dr. Tomkinson, told the BBC on the subject of the study : ” About 30 % to 60 % of the decline in performance of the endurance race, can be explained by increased fat mass.”

Experts believe that the data should be used to raise awareness of the importance of physical exercise. ” If a young person is not in shape now, is more likely to develop problems such as coronary heart disease in the future “, said Dr. Tomkinson.

What experts advise ?

The lead researcher said that children need to be inspired and encouraged to do more vigorous exercise. According to him, there are many methods to get fit like weightlifting, gymnastics or tennis, and best for cardiovascular health are racing background.

He added that if these habits are not changed, the public health consequences in the fututo, could be dire.

Professor Michael Gwitz, the American Heart Association, said : ” The type of exercise is very important : it must be something that makes you sweat and that is sustained and dynamic, that promote cardiovascular health.”

Young people often believe they do not need insurance, they are ” immune” to the disease. But the new health insurance market which was launched on October 1 sponsored by the Health Care Act, offers alternatives that are protected because… you never know what can happen.
